Through interior design and interior decorating, the image of Miami-Dade County that comes to mind is sun-drenched rooms and open spaces. As interior design has changed over the decades, many of their respective influences have been noted in the Miami-Dade County area, which includes: City of Miami, Bal Harbour, Coral Gables, Downtown Miami, Sunny Isles and Williams Island.

There have been many changes in interior design over the decades that have influenced the Miami-Dade County area. Interior design and interior decorating influences have occurred over several decades. The following represent historical influences for interior design in Miami-Dade County.

The city of Miami lies on the southeast side of the Florida Peninsula, separated from the Atlantic Ocean by the Biscayne Bay Lagoon and Miami Beach with its huge hotels and condominiums. Miami has the world’s largest passenger seaport, a port of call for numerous cruise ships. Miami is an important and influential cultural center with linguistic ties to North America, Central and South America as well as the Caribbean. Miami Beaches are a major highlight for the tourist industry. Miami is home to two national parks: The Everglades and Biscayne National Park. The latter being the only living tropical reef in the United States. The city of Miami is home to the Viscaya Museum and Gardens, one of Miami’s greatest treasures. It boasts 34 rooms on a 28 acre estate and is an Italian Renaissance style villa filled with European furniture and decorative arts from the 15th to 19th century. The gardens contain Italian and French fountains, pools and sculptures. This estate hosted a meeting between Pope Paul II and former President Reagan in 1987 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1991.
Bal Harbour, a village in Miami-Dade County, is located on the northern tip of the barrier island referred to as Miami Beach. It is a small affluent village located between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Bal Harbour features exclusive estates of many different architectural designs and is the home to Bal Harbour Shops, one of the most productive shopping venues in the world.
Sunny Isles is a city located on a barrier island surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Intracoastal Waterway on the west. It is an area of cultural diversity with stores lining Collins Avenue, the main thoroughfare through the city. A growing resort area, Sunny Isles Beach is minutes from Bal Harbour to the south and Aventura to the north and west.
Coral Gables is one of the first “planned communities” with its strict zoning regulations and lead the way to the development of the gated community and the Home Owners Association. Known as “City Beautiful”, Coral Gables features many fine residences and is known for its tree-lined boulevards, ivy covered mansions and historical land marks such as the Biltmore Hotel and the Venetian Pool. Many people visit the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens. Coral Gables is home to the University of Miami and is only 4 miles from Miami International Airport. Miracle Mile features fine dining and shopping.
Downtown Miami is an urban residential neighborhood and is the central business district of Miami and South Florida in the United States. The area is the cultural, financial and commercial center of South Florida. This area has become the fastest growing area in Miami with large scale high rise construction and an increase in population. Brickell Avenue and Biscayne Boulevard are the main north-south roads and Flagler Street is the main east-west road. Downtown Miami is home to many major museums, parks, education centers, financial institutions, corporate headquarters, courthouses, government Offices, theatres, shops and many of the oldest buildings in the city.
Williams Island, a private community along the Intracoastal Waterway, consists of many extravagant high-rise condominiums that offer amazing waterfront views. Located in beautiful Aventura, Williams Island is convenient to the Aventura Mall and Bal Harbour Shops, offering the best in luxury shopping.
